The Bruins are hosting the Philadelphia Flyers today. I am live-blogging from my couch in my living room for two reasons. 1) I am not working! 2) I am feeling under the weather, again. The Bruins are 3-0-0 at home so far this season. I made an appearance at all three of those games, but needed the break today.
Tim Thomas is starting in net for the Bruins. Thomas leads the league in both goals against average and save percentage.
First Period: The Bruins had a power play early, but I don’t think they did much. At least I didn’t notice much if they did. I did notice that today was the very first time I saw the opening of the Bruins broadcast with Bruins players popping up and stuff. So that was neat. The Bruins have another power play. Dennis Wideman got a rocket shot off. Martin Biron is in net for the Flyers. Shawn Thornton is fighting Riley Cote at center ice. Thornton got some nice punches in to start the fight off. Milan Lucic squared off with Ben Eager. Lucic has a cut on his left cheek. The cut doesn’t look like a result from a punch though because none really connected. Just a scratch.
With 3:53 remaining the first period, Patrice Bergeron was hit in the back boards to the left of Biron’s net, which I missed. Bergeron was lying motionless on the ice. Bergeron looked unconscious, and his wasn’t moving much. With the trainer over with him, he did move his left hand. The team doctor is out there with him now. The Flyers trainer is out there assisting the Bruins trainer and doctors. They immobilized Bergeron and are going to put him on the stretcher. When they showed the replay, Bergeron’s right shoulder took the brunt of the hit, and went into the boards right above the dasher. The medical staff cut his jersey off, and as he was wheeled off on the stretcher, his eyes were not open.
Randy Jones got a 5 minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.
To resume the live-blog as much as I can, Jeff Carter just hit the post behind Thomas’s left. The period ends scoreless. Not sure how much more live-blogging I will be doing, because it’s hard to focus on the game, but I’ll stick with it for as much as I can.
WBZ reported Bergeron’s parents were in the crowd today. Bergeron’s father was seen running towards the ambulance. Rob Simpson confirmed his parents were there too.
Second Period: Did anybody else notice the Bruins were on a power play? Don’t worry, they didn’t either. Fans are distracted. Players are distracted. Only 40 more minutes of hockey and this will be one of the worst Bruins games I will have seen in my decade of being a fan despite the score at the end of it. Marco Sturm gives the Bruins a 1-0 lead on the power play. The goal was scored at 7:51. Mike Richards scores shorthanded on the breakaway to tie the game at 1.
Bergeron Update: Bergeron lost consciousness and is being looked at by doctors at Mass General. The official update was very basic from Rob Simpson. NESN showed the replay of the hit again (it’s been shown only a few times, thank goodness) and as Bergeron was wheeled off, there was blood under his visor on the left side of his face.
Sturm hit the crossbar. Bruins just received a too many men on the ice penalty at 12:35. Flyers capitalized on the power play at 13:00 and take the lead 2-1. Phil Kessel is being awarded a penalty shot after Timonen threw his stick at the puck on Kessel’s chance. Kessel missed the net and hit himself on the helmet with his hand on the bench. Poor Phil. Aaron Ward went off with an interference penalty on the next shift after the penalty shot. The Flyers lead 2-1 after two periods.
Rob Simpson relayed a statement from Jones to viewers on NESN’s telecast.
Third Period: Dennis Wideman was hurt after a face-off at the beginning of the period. He went to the bench under his own power. Wideman got hit with a high-stick. Metropolit took Bergeron’s place between Sturm and Chuck Kobasew. It’s taken me this long to realize it, with 13:33 left in the period. Daniel Briere got a penalty for something at 13:48. Andrew Alberts had a shot on net, and Biron made the pad save. Alberts also had a hit.
Bergeron Non-Update: Rob Simpson reported the Bruins will not alter anything regarding their post-game, and have no plans to update about Bergeron right now. It has been roughly two hours since the hit.
Thomas was pulled for the extra attacker (Metropolit). Bruins closed in for a couple of chances to tie the game. Bruins take a timeout. And while I was fixing my internet connection, the Bruins lost 2-1. This was the Bruins first home loss of the season.
