Scouting the competition

I have been missing in action a little bit this week due to an unforeseen circumstance that occurred only one day after returning from vacation. I lost my cell phone and I have not been happy about it or the situations that have followed. Luckily, I should have a new phone by 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Needless to say, I was a little distracted when the NHL season opened in North America on Wednesday, and Thursdays have Grey’s Anatomy and Big Shots practically etched in stone.

So I am very happy there are some late NHL games tonight that I could catch afterwards.

I have the St. Louis Blues vs. Phoenix Coyotes game on to watch a little bit of both Nick Boynton and Brad Boyes. (Hannu Toivonen is not playing.)

And Boynton just came to defenseman Keith Ballard’s defense and got into a fight.

And now Boyes scored a goal to reduce the Coyotes lead from 3-1 to 3-2.

The Blues pulled Manny Legace to give them an extra attacker with over a minute left. Now Ed Jovanovski caught Boyes with a high-stick, and the Blues will have a two-man advantage with the empty net. Shane Doan shot the puck wide of the empty net.

Another shot just wide of the empty net, and now there’s less than 30 seconds left. And another shot wide.

But the Coyotes hold on to win 3-2. I think the Coyotes might be the dark horse of the West this season.

Remember, the Bruins face the Coyotes on Saturday night, and it’s good to scout your opponents whenever you get the chance to.
