With Dennis Wideman's deal finalized (four-year, $15.5 million extension - $3.875 million annual cap hit), it didn't take the Bruins long to take the first step of the buyout process.
The Bruins placed Glen Murray on unconditional waivers earlier this afternoon.
If Murray goes unclaimed and the Bruins complete the buyout, they will trim $2,766,667 from their 2008-09 cap hit, bringing their current number down to $55,469,999. They will carry Murray's remaining money of $1,383,333 on their 2009-10 payroll.
Murray, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was drafted 18th overall by Boston in the 1991 draft. He played four seasons with the Bruins before playing on the Penguins and Kings.
In 2001, ten years after he was drafted, the Bruins acquired him from the Kings, along with Jozef Stumpel, in a trade for Jason Allison and Mikko Eloranta.
Murray has played 570 games with the Bruins, scoring 209 goals and racking up 155 assists. His best season for Boston was 2002-2003 where he played all 82 games and scored 44 goals.
