The Bruins are proving to be the team to beat this season and not many teams have been able to do so. The Bruins had a test on Saturday when they hosted the defending Stanley Cup champions, and as the Red Wings came out flying - outshooting the Bruins 7-0 in the first period - it was believed that the Bruins would be on the losing side at the end of the game.
Until they scored on their first shot 12 minutes into the game. Blake Wheeler scored for Bruins giving them the lead. Phil Kessel added to the lead at 16:11 and the Bruins went into the first intermission up 2-0. Manny Fernandez was tested often in the first period and made some incredible saves in a very solid outing.
The opening period came at a cost as defenseman Aaron Ward was injured. Ward checked a Wing into the boards and fell, and was limping through the rest of his shift before going to the dressing room. He didn't return to the game.
After Chuck Kobasew scored to make it 3-0 at 8:01 of the second period, Ty Conklin was pulled in favor of Chris Osgood. The Red Wings got on the board when they scored on the power play. Wheeler was sitting in the penalty box for hooking when Johan Franzen scored at 16:25.
David Krejci added a goal at 6:51 in the third period to give the Bruins a 4-1 win. Fernandez made 29 saves in the victory.
"We're in sync," said Julien. "I'm standing behind the bench in the third period and I don't have to say much. The players are the guys yelling the things to guys on the ice on what they need to do."
Notes: Tim Thomas hasn't been starting because he's hindered by a cold. Thomas was a game-day decision on Saturday and Fernandez started his second consecutive game on back-to-back days... Ward suffered a leg injury... Patrice Bergeron was bothered by a muscle pull that forced him not to take many face-offs. After winning five of seven draws on Saturday night, Bergeron seems to be fine now. [Source]
