Bruins vs. Kings

Well, what a game that was in Los Angeles tonight. Marc Savard returned to the line-up. Manny Fernandez started in goal, and it was definitely a wild game.

Phil Kessel got on the board first, scoring at 16:51 of the first period, assisted by David Krejci. (+1 Kessel, Krejci, Sturm, Alberts, Ference.) Former Bruin Brad Stuart notched his first goal of the season on the power play at 19:47 to tie the game at 1.

In the second period, which I missed the majority of, Glen Murray scored a power play goal at 4:05 (assisted by Savard and Chara). Aaron Ward added his first goal of the season at 5:56. Assists on the Ward goal went to Milan Lucic (his first NHL point) and Kessel. (+1 Ward, Chara, Lucic, Kessel, Krejci.) Kessel added another goal, this time on the power play, at 8:56. Assists on that goal went to Savard and Bergeron. The Bruins led 4-1. Kings’ Brady Murray scored at 17:45. (-1 Wideman, Stuart, Schaefer, Kessel, Savard.) The Kings’ added a power play goal at 19:11 of the second period to get within one goal, making the score 4-3 Bruins.

Kessel got his first NHL career hat trick at 1:27 of the third period, assisted by Savard and Ference. (+ Kessel, Savard, Ference, Schaefer, Alberts.) Mike Cammalleri scored at 4:37 to bring the Kings within one goal again. (-1 Ward, Alberts, Lucic, Kessel, Savard.) Anze Kopitar scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 8:19 to tie the score 5-5. Fernandez was shaken up a couple of times, but remained in the game.

At 9:42, Savard added a goal on the power play to give the Bruins the 6-5 advantage. Assists went to Murray and Schaefer. Then Lucic scored his first NHL goal at 15:19, assisted by Krejci and Chara. (+1 Lucic, Krejci, Kessel, Chara, Ward.)

With 2:10 remaining in the game, the Kings pulled their goaltender, Jonathan Bernier, for the extra attacker. Kobasew then scored an empty net goal at 18:33, assisted by Axelsson and Savard. (+! Kobasew, Axelsson, Savard, Alberts, Ference.) Patrick O’Sullivan added another Kings’ goal with 4.6 seconds remaining. (-1 Stuart, Wideman, Lucic, Metropolit, Thornton.)

The final score was 8-6. Lucic actually got himself a Gordie Howe hat trick (goal, assist and fight) because he had a fight during the first period, which I missed. Kessel’s hat trick not only got him #1 star honors at the game, but also on NHL.com.

The Bruins finish their road trip Saturday night in San Jose.

One final note is that I’m disappointed nobody answered the trivia question, other than Andy Brickley during the 3rd period of the game. The ex-Bruins within the Kings’ organization are: defensemen Brad Stuart and Kevin Dallman, assistant coach Dave Lewis, director of pro development Mike O’Connell and goaltending coach Bill Ranford. I was actually pleased to hear Brickley name them all.

I may actually take the rest of the weekend off, and reassess the blog and website. I have been putting too much time and energy into blogging so far this season, and realized tonight it was actually nice to sit on the couch sans laptop and root the Bruins on to victory.

I hate the West Coast road trip to open the season since I rarely get to see the games. I've only seen the Dallas game, but it sounds like this will be a fun team to watch.
You agree?

BTW, I love Lucic already.

Wow what a good game last night, I am kind of liking the B's so far this season and getting psyched for the opener. I want my pretzel.

Then to switch over and watch the Sox implode did put a damper on the night

Brian, if you have Comcast and the onDemand feature, they might have some "Bruins in 2" games on there. (I'll have to check myself.) The team this season is definitely fun to watch. I can't wait to see the team in person for the home opener. Who would have thought Lucic would be leading the team in fighting majors?

Ash, the Sox definitely did put a damper on the night. And that last minute of the Bruins/Sharks game was full of ups and downs. Hope you get a good pretzel at the home opener. ;)
