The Boston Bruins have signed defenseman Derek Morris. The news was broken by James Murphy (writer for Inside Hockey) on Twitter around 4 this afternoon. Morris played for the New York Rangers last season. His salary was $3.95 million.
The contract is reportedly a one-year deal worth $3.3 million according to TSN. Earlier when rumors were going around that he signed with the Bruins, I was hoping the cap number would be somewhere below $3 million. But compared to last year's salary, Morris still took a pay cut.
I was familiar with Morris during his days in Phoenix because of another former Bruins defenseman. Morris was traded from the Coyotes to the Rangers at this past season's trade deadline. The Bruins were reportedly trying to acquire him at the time.
They finally got their man.
The Aaron Ward trade earlier in the day looks to have made room for Morris, but where does that leave Phil Kessel? In a post by Joe Haggerty, Ward hinted that there is some action going on behind the scenes, which may lead to even more trades.
“I think you have to explore certain options and you go down the line of certain guys that you can trade. I ended up being the guy that was tradable. I know a little bit more background that’s going on,” said Ward. “I’m not at liberty to discuss the facts or what’s going on behind the scenes, but there’s economics involved up there."
Bruins fans knew it would be a task to fit David Krejci and Kessel, both restricted free agents, under the cap. I don't think they ever thought there would be this much movement on July 25th.
(The time of this post reflects the time I initially started writing it. I left it unpublished until more details were known later tonight.)
